How to Find Your MAC Address

This article will assist you with finding your device's MAC (Media Access Control) address.

Each device varies and we've made a best-effort attempt to outline the location of the MAC address on the most common wireless devices. If you still need help, please contact the ITS Service Desk by phone at 828-251-6445 or by email at helpdesk@unca.edu.

Windows PCs, laptops, and tablets

XP

Click on the Windows Start button and click Run. In the Run box, type in cmd and click OK. At the blinking cursor, type ipconfig /all and hit Enter. Among the information will be one or more listings. Look at Physical Address for the Wireless adapter Wireless Network Connection; that is the MAC address.

Vista
Click on the Windows Orb at the bottom left of your screen. In the search box, type cmd and hit Enter. At the blinking cursor, type getmac /v and hit Enter. Among the information will be one or more listings. Look for the Physical Address for the Network Adapter labeled as Wireless; that is the MAC address.

Mac

MacOS X 10.5 - 10.7

Open System Preferences and select Network. Select Wi-Fi (labelled Airport on 10.5 and 10.6) on the left menu then click Advanced. Select the Hardware tab. The MAC Address line shows the MAC address for this interface.

Chrome

Open a browser window. In the address bar, type chrome://system and press Enter. Look for ifconfig and click the Expand button next to it. Look for either the eth0 section (wired MAC address) or the wlan0 section (wireless address). In both sections, the MAC address will be listed as ether.

Linux

Linux

Open a shell/terminal window. Type ifconfig -a. Determine which interface you need; Wireless HWaddr shows the MAC address for this interface.

Apple Devices

iPhone / iPad / iPod Touch

Open Settings, select General and About. Look for Wi-Fi Address.

Android Devices

Android Tablets

On the Home screen, tap the Menu key and go to Settings. Scroll down and tap About Tablet, then Status. Scroll down to view WiFi MAC address.

Android Phones

Depending on your device, attempt to follow one set of instructions listed below:

On the Home screen, tap the Menu button and go to Settings. Tap About Phone then Status. Scroll down to view WiFi MAC address.

or,

On the Home screen, tap the Menu button and go to Settings. Tap About Phone, then Hardware information. Scroll down to view WiFi MAC address.

or,

On the Home screen, press the Menu key and select Settings. Now select Wireless and network, then WiFi Settings. You will find the MAC address under the Advanced section.

Gaming Consoles

PS3

Go to Settings on the Cross Media Bar (XMB) and select System Settings. Scroll down and select System Information. Your MAC address will be the first item listed.

Wii

From the home screen, select the "Wii" button on the lower left hand corner. From here, select Wii Settings which will be the on-screen button on the right. On this screen, select the right arrow to advance to the second set of settings. Select the Internet option, then Console Information. The MAC address will be listed under USB Ethernet Adapter MAC Address.

Xbox 360

Once you're on the Xbox 360 Dashboard, push the middle button of the Xbox 360 controller. Scroll all the way over to the right to Settings, and select System Settings. Select Network Settings, and then the wireless network. Select Configure Network. Scroll right to Additional Settings, and select Advanced Settings. This page will show your MAC address.

Smart TVs / DVRs / Set-top boxes

For instructions on how to find the MAC address for your internet-ready or smart TV, consult the owner's manual or user guide for your set.

Apple TV

From the main menu, choose Settings, and then click About. Look for the MAC address next to "Ethernet ID". Alternatively, you may find the MAC address printed on the UPC label on the Apple TV box.

TiVo
From the TiVo Menu, select Settings, and then choose Phone/Network. Your MAC address will appear on the page that opens.
Roku
From the Roku home screen, select Settings, and then About. The MAC address will appear on your screen. Alternatively, you can find the MAC address on the bottom or back of your Roku.
Boxee Box
From the Settings menu, select System, and then Information. Your MAC address will appear on the screen.
Google TV
From Settings, select Network, and then Status. Your MAC address will appear on the screen.
