Zoom License Utilization

Purpose

Zoom Meeting licensed accounts provide access to advanced curricular tools such as cloud recording, breakout rooms, polling, utilization reporting, live transcription functions, etc.  DLS staff members provide initial training and support to the license holder through the use of Zoom Meeting support articles, ITS Knowledge Base articles and workshops, as well as continued assistance in resolving technical issues for Zoom Video session participants.  

Zoom License Utilization

Each UNC Asheville campus member (faculty, staff and student) receives a Zoom Meeting licensed account that may be activated by use of the UNC Asheville Zoom Meeting vanity URL.

UNC Asheville Community Zoom Meeting Pro System Utilization

Below are use case examples for UNC Asheville Campus Community Zoom Meeting Pro system utilization.

  • Synchronous Course Pedagogy support

    • Student(s) unable to attend the local class session for any reason can attend and interact within scheduled class sessions, with permission of the Faculty member.

    • UNC Online course offering are open to enrolled UNC System students through the use of webconferencing technology systems.

    • Collaboration between faculty and students located at remote institutions with local faculty and students.

    • Virtual field trips with regional, national or international museums and collections.

  • Supplemental Course Pedagogy support

    • Allows for Instructor office hour, pre-exam, and peer-to-peer sessions.

    • Allows faculty to adjust to inclement weather and illness situations as they occur.

    • Student virtual meetings with peers, campus support personnel and or family members.

  • Departmental Support

    • Position interviews

      • Allows campus departments to interview national and international candidates prior to on campus visitations.

      • Allows search committee members to attend interviews from remote locations in the event of scheduling conflicts.

    • Training Programs

  • Departmental Guest Speaker presentations

    • Topical presentations by off campus subject matter experts to local campus participants.

    • Travel and associated expenses are not incurred.

  • Departmental meetings requiring connections from multiple technology types

    • Zoom Video Computer Desktop Client(Desktop or Laptop)

    • Web Browser connection

    • Mobile Device (Tablet or Cellular Phone)

    • Telephone

Management and Support of assigned Zoom Video licenses

UNC Asheville's Distance Learning Services (DLS) unit is responsible for the management and support of Zoom Meeting Pro system utilization on the UNC Asheville Campus.

  • Zoom Video licenses are assigned to official UNC Asheville electronic mail accounts, (accounts ending in @unca.edu).

  • A Zoom Meeting license is required to schedule and  host a meeting, however anyone may join a meeting using Zoom meeting apps or desktop applications (Windows and Mac).

  • The Zoom Meeting license Account Owner shall be the point of contact (POC) for DLS staff communication and coordination of support and or service efforts.

  • Use of assigned Zoom Meeting licensed accounts is intended to support individual or department sponsored activities and programs, as well as addressing work/life concerns. 

    • Google Hangouts Meetings program access is available for all UNC Asheville campus members and may be used for any activity that complies with established UNC Asheville Information Technology Services (ITS) Usage policies. https://its.unca.edu/usage-policies

  • Zoom Meeting licenses can support 300 concurrent participants within a single meeting and sharing audio, video and computer displays.

  • Contact DLS staff via the ITServicedesk@unca.edu in the event that two or more discrete concurrent meetings need to be scheduled. 

    • Types of license allocation

      • Individual - Single person use to conduct scheduled classes, meetings, projects, etc.  This person is responsible for scheduling, managing, and supporting license activities.

      • Group - Two or more departmental / organization members will utilize the license to conduct scheduled classes, meetings, projects, etc.

  • Individuals or Departments that need phone conference capabilities should contact ITS Networking, Infrastructure, and Systems staff via the ITServicedesk@unca.edu help desk.
